What actually comes in the box?
Three pieces: the reversible vegan leather sheet, the grey wool felt base it sits on, and the separate wireless charging panel.
The panel is its own piece rather than being built into the mat, so you can position it on either side or take it with you on its own.
Does it need charging itself?
No. There is no battery inside. A USB-C cable runs to the charging panel, so plug it into a wall adapter, a power bank or a spare port on your laptop and the pads come alive.
The mat itself needs no power at all.

No, and that is deliberate. It is a separate slim panel that sits alongside the mat, so you can put it on the left or the right, move it as your desk changes, or pick it up and take just the panel somewhere else.
It runs the full height of the mat's short edge and butts up neatly against it, so the two read as one surface when they are side by side.
Most standard cases are fine. Thin silicone, plastic and leather cases usually pass power through without trouble. Very thick cases, battery cases, and anything with a metal plate or a magnetic mount built in can block the charge. If yours is unusually thick, take it off and set the phone down bare.
The leather sheet is finished on both faces - white on one, black on the other. Lift it off the felt base, turn it over and lay it back down.
It is the same sheet either way, so you are not swapping in a second mat or storing a spare.
The felt base is its own piece that the leather sheet sits on. It grips the desk and adds a little softness underneath, and it is what stops the whole thing sliding around while you type.
