Do I have to pair them separately?
No. The two halves talk to each other, so you pair your phone once and they sort out which is left and which is right between themselves.
Can I use just one half?
Yes. A single half works on its own as a normal portable speaker, which is handy when you only want to carry one.
Put them back together and you are in stereo again.

Far enough to sit either side of a desk, a kitchen bench or a small room. They stay in sync over a normal living space - you are not going to get one in the garden and one upstairs, but across a room is exactly what it is built for.
Genuinely stereo. Each half takes one channel, so anything mixed with left and right information actually separates. That is the whole reason to split it rather than just turning one speaker up.
Joined together they charge as one unit, so in normal use both fill up at once. If you have been running a single half on its own, click them back together and it tops back up.
It is a portable speaker and travels fine in a bag, but treat it as an indoor and covered-outdoor device. Do not leave it out in rain or sit it somewhere it can be splashed.
